Injury updates and roster adjustments
Despite the setback with Daniels, the Commanders received a boost with the return of tight end Chig Okonkwo and linebacker Frankie Luvu. Both players had been sidelined for the previous two games due to hamstring and groin injuries, respectively. Their availability provides much-needed depth, particularly for a defense that has been forced to navigate significant personnel losses at the inside linebacker position.
The team is currently managing the long-term absence of Leo Chenal, who was ruled out for the season with a fractured neck, and Jordan Magee, who remains on injured reserve until at least Week 6. The defensive unit has shown resilience, however, highlighted by rookie Sonny Styles’ recent performance against the Seattle Seahawks, where he earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording an interception and a forced fumble.
Assessment of Daniels and team status
Daniels participated in limited practice sessions throughout the week while wearing a protective brace on his left arm. Coach Quinn emphasized that the decision to return will be based on a combination of medical clearance and performance readiness, with the staff looking to evaluate the quarterback after he completes a full practice session next week. Daniels himself noted that he felt comfortable performing basic quarterback duties, such as taking snaps and handing off the ball, during his limited work.
The Commanders face further lineup challenges heading into the weekend, as guard Sam Cosmi and safety Nick Cross have been ruled out for the trip to London. Additionally, the status of running back Rachaad White remains uncertain due to a shoulder injury, while the team continues to integrate newly signed running back Austin Ekeler into their offensive system. Mariota, who led the team to a 33-31 victory over Seattle last week by throwing for 183 yards and three touchdowns, will look to maintain that momentum in his second start of the season.
