Portland Trail Blazers Fire New Broadcaster Following Discovery of Inappropriate Social Media Posts

The Portland Trail Blazers have terminated the contract of their newly appointed play-by-play announcer, Braiden Bell, on the same day his hiring was announced. The decision followed the emergence of a series of inappropriate social media posts authored by Bell when he was a teenager.

In a formal statement released on Thursday, the organization emphasized its commitment to maintaining a respectful environment. The team declared that it maintains zero tolerance for racist, sexist, or harmful commentary. According to the club, the discovered posts were in direct violation of both team and league policies, as well as the organization's core values and expectations, leading to the immediate decision to discontinue the professional relationship.

Details of the Posts and Team Response

The offensive content, which was brought to light by a reporter for KGW in Portland, originated from 2012 and 2013, a period when Bell was approximately 15 years old. The posts included derogatory remarks directed at Asian individuals and various misogynistic comments. Bell, now 29, had previously served as a broadcaster for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and the G League’s Valley Suns over the last two years.

Following the discovery, neither Bell nor his representation provided a response to inquiries from various media outlets. His agent directed all questions regarding the matter to the Trail Blazers organization. In their statement, the team acknowledged a failure in their vetting process, offering an apology to their fanbase and the community of Rip City. The franchise reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all individuals associated with the team feel safe and welcome, promising to improve their internal procedures moving forward.

Context of the Broadcasting Change

The appointment of Bell was intended to fill the vacancy left by longtime play-by-play announcer Kevin Calabro. Calabro, who had served in the role since 2016, departed the organization in July after declining what he described as a subprime contract offer. The transition in the broadcasting booth occurs amidst a period of scrutiny regarding the team's operations under new owner Tom Dundon, who has implemented several cost-cutting measures and faced public debate regarding the financing of a proposed 600 million dollar renovation for the Moda Center.
