India A secure dramatic draw against Australia A to clinch series

India A successfully navigated a tense final day to secure a draw against Australia A in the second four-day match in Puducherry on Friday. Facing a daunting target of 365, the hosts were forced to bat for survival after slipping to 199/7, eventually finishing on 310/9 to maintain their 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

The result was largely defined by a resolute eighth-wicket partnership between Yash Rathod and Shams Mulani. The pair batted for more than 36 overs, effectively blunting the Australian attack and denying the visitors a series-leveling victory. Their 80-run stand proved pivotal, as they successfully negotiated 16 overs against the second new ball during a critical phase of the afternoon.

Resilience under pressure

The day began with India A resuming at 28/1, needing a disciplined batting display to avoid defeat. Night watchman Tushar Deshpande provided early stability, contributing a vital 52 off 119 balls. He shared a 60-run third-wicket partnership with captain Devdutt Padikkal, who added 26, helping the side reach 99/2 by the lunch break. Despite the loss of overnight batter Aayush Pandey for 19, the team appeared steady during the morning session.

The momentum shifted in the second session as Australia A’s bowlers began to find regular breakthroughs. Liam Scott proved particularly effective, finishing with figures of 5/37. Scott claimed the wicket of Padikkal, who edged behind to wicketkeeper Josh Philippe, before Liam Hatcher removed Deshpande, who was caught at mid-off. By tea, India A had slumped to 205/7, leaving the tail to face a difficult final session.

A defiant finish

With the match hanging in the balance, Rathod and Mulani anchored the innings. Rathod’s 80 off 138 balls and Mulani’s patient 29 off 131 balls kept the scoreboard moving slowly while consuming valuable time. The resistance was finally broken with seven overs remaining when Scott trapped Rathod leg before wicket. Two overs later, Scott dismissed Mulani, leaving the final pair of Nachiket Bhute and Praful Hinge to survive the remaining three overs.

Bhute, who remained unbeaten on 20, and Hinge, who finished on 0, successfully held firm to ensure the draw. Following the conclusion of the match, Sam Harper was named Player of the Match for his performance, while Shams Mulani was recognized as the Player of the Series for his consistent contributions throughout the two-match encounter.
