Yuzvendra Chahal Retires from First-Class Cricket After 17-Year Career

Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has officially announced his retirement from first-class cricket, bringing a close to a red-ball career that spanned 17 years. The 35-year-old, who has been a prominent figure in India's limited-overs setup, confirmed the decision on Friday, reflecting on a journey that began with Haryana in 2009.

Throughout his first-class career, Chahal claimed 148 wickets across 49 matches at an average of 32.27. While he achieved significant success in the domestic circuit, the leg-spinner noted that his long-held ambition of representing India in Test cricket would remain unfulfilled. Despite this, he expressed deep gratitude for his time in the format, which he credited for teaching him the values of patience and resilience.

Reflecting on a Red-Ball Legacy

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Chahal recalled his early introduction to the sport at the age of 10. He described the red ball as his first connection to cricket, noting that the format provided him with some of his most cherished memories. The spinner revealed that his final first-class appearance took place at Lord's, a venue that added a layer of emotional significance to his departure from the format.

Chahal took the opportunity to acknowledge the support he received throughout his development, specifically thanking the Haryana Cricket Association. He credited former officials, including Ranbir Singh Mahindra and Anirudh Singh Chaudhary, for their consistent trust and belief in his abilities from his early days as a young cricketer to his final match.

Focus Shifts to White-Ball Ambitions

Although Chahal is stepping away from the longer format, he emphasized that his professional career is far from over. The spinner, who has represented India in 72 ODIs and 80 T20Is, stated that his desire to compete at the international level remains undiminished. His last appearance for the national side occurred during a T20I against the West Indies in August 2023.

Looking ahead, Chahal expressed a strong commitment to earning his way back into the national squad for white-ball fixtures. He maintained that he still possesses the hunger and capability to contribute at the highest level, signaling his intent to dedicate his efforts toward future opportunities in the One-Day and T20 formats.
