Sujeet Kalkal delivered a standout performance on Friday, overcoming a deficit to defeat Olympic champion Kotaro Kiyooka and secure his place in the men's 65kg gold medal round. The Indian wrestler trailed 0-2 after the first period but mounted a determined comeback in the second, ultimately finishing tied at 3-3. Sujeet was declared the winner on criteria, having executed a higher-scoring move during the tense semifinal encounter.

The path to the final saw Sujeet demonstrate consistent form throughout the day. He opened his campaign by defeating Afghanistan's Sayed Omar Zazai 13-3 via technical superiority, despite an early scare that saw him fall behind 3-0. He responded with a shoulder throw and a series of rolls to turn the match in his favor. In the quarterfinals, he dominated Iran's Abbas Ebrahimzadehsavadkouhi, securing a 10-0 technical superiority victory without conceding a single point.

Road to the Gold Medal Bout

Sujeet's tactical awareness was on full display against Ebrahimzadehsavadkouhi, where he initiated an early shoulder throw and maintained control throughout the bout. By the end of the first period, he had established an 8-0 lead, quickly closing out the match in the second period to set up the high-stakes semifinal against the Japanese Olympic gold medalist, Kiyooka.

With his spot in the final now confirmed, Sujeet is set to face Tajikistan's Abdulmazhid Kudiev in the gold medal match. His progression marks a significant achievement in the tournament following his clinical displays in the earlier rounds.

Elsewhere on the mat, Dipanshi Phogat kept her medal hopes alive in the women's 50kg category.
