Patrick Mahomes revitalizes Chiefs' deep passing attack

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has enjoyed a productive start to the 2026 season, guiding his team to an undefeated 3-0 record while displaying marked improvements in his downfield passing. Nine months removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee, the signal-caller has refined his footwork and demonstrated increased efficiency with play-action and off-platform throws.

The most notable development in Mahomes' game has been his success on deep passes. Over the last two outings, he has completed eight of 14 attempts traveling at least 15 yards, accumulating 231 yards in the process. This efficiency marks a significant turnaround from the previous season, when he completed just 41.6% of his deep attempts—ranking 19th in the league—while throwing five interceptions against only two touchdowns.

Building chemistry and overcoming pressure

Mahomes has successfully distributed these deep-ball opportunities among a diverse group of targets, including tight end Travis Kelce and receivers Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice. The quarterback noted that the team's play-action game has been instrumental in creating one-on-one matchups, allowing his receivers to make plays in space. This aerial success has been complemented by the strong performance of running back Kenneth Walker III, who has already tallied 442 scrimmage yards.

The Chiefs' passing attack faces a stern test this Sunday against the undefeated Las Vegas Raiders, a defense that leads the league with nine takeaways. Protecting Mahomes will be a priority, particularly as the offensive line adjusts to injuries. Rookie right tackle Kahlil Benson has been filling in at left tackle for Josh Simmons, who is sidelined with a bulging disc. Despite being hit a season-high five times in last week's win over the Miami Dolphins, Mahomes has maintained his composure, drawing praise from head coach Andy Reid for his ability to perform under pressure.

Emerging threats and future potential

The recent form of Rashee Rice has provided a significant boost to the offense. After undergoing knee surgery in May and navigating a 30-day jail sentence during his rehabilitation, Rice initially struggled with route running at training camp. However, he has since regained his confidence, recording seven receptions for 88 yards against the Dolphins and securing key gains of 34 and 31 yards in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Tyquan Thornton continues to serve as a reliable deep threat, having made pivotal catches in the team's Week 2 overtime victory against the Indianapolis Colts.

As the season progresses, the coaching staff is looking to integrate receiver Xavier Worthy more effectively into the deep-passing game. Despite his speed—highlighted by a 4.21-second 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL combine—Worthy has struggled to produce big plays, recording 10 receptions for just 36 yards. Mahomes remains optimistic about their developing chemistry, emphasizing that Worthy is executing his assignments correctly and that their connection will improve with continued repetition.
