DENVER – In a highly anticipated return,
During his limited time on the field, Nix completed 6 of 9 passes for 76 yards and threw a touchdown, although the Broncos ultimately fell to the Packers with a score of 33-13. Notably, Nix connected with wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, who made his first reception since being traded from the Miami Dolphins. Waddle's impressive 35-yard catch-and-run helped convert a crucial third down on Denver's opening drive. Nix showcased his efficiency by going 3 of 4 on that initial series, culminating in a 21-yard touchdown pass to running back RJ Harvey.
"You can't really explain the type of player [Waddle] is," Nix remarked. "When you throw him the ball, you just understand it's a little bit different; he's just a really great football player." He also praised Harvey's touchdown catch, noting, "The catch he made wasn't necessarily easy... he's a special football player."
Coaching Changes and Future Prospects
Nix returned for a second offensive series that resulted in a 53-yard field goal by Wil Lutz, marking the end of his night as well as that of most Broncos starters. Coach Sean Payton had anticipated Nix would play around 14 snaps, a prediction that proved accurate. This game was particularly significant as it was Nix's first under the new offensive coordinator, Davis Webb, who was promoted to playcaller on game day.
Team Performance and Coach's Assessment
Teammate Sam Ehlinger expressed enthusiasm about Nix's performance, stating, "It was awesome to see Nix back. I thought he did a great job, right back to postseason form." Looking ahead, Payton indicated that Nix would see action in the Broncos' preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings. However, the coach was less than pleased with the overall team performance, stating, "It wasn't good, wasn't good. We had too many minus plays, too many penalties... I can't think of one area where we outplayed [the Packers], and I'm just being honest."
