Sanat Sangwan, inspired by Virat Kohli and Lewis Hamilton, gears up for his upcoming challenge in the Duleep Trophy.

NEW DELHI: Sanat Sangwan, a promising 25-year-old cricketer, is making waves in the domestic circuit, particularly as a key player for Delhi. When asked if his name was inspired by Sri Lankan cricket icon Sanath Jayasuriya, Sangwan chuckled, dismissing the notion. Over the past two seasons, he has emerged as Delhi's most reliable batsman, showcasing his talent and determination on the field.

In his inaugural Ranji Trophy season (2024-25), Sangwan scored 385 runs, providing much-needed stability to a struggling batting lineup. However, it was the following season (2025-26) that marked a significant turning point for him, as he accumulated 828 runs at an impressive average of 69, including three centuries. His consistent performance has earned him a place in the North Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, set to commence on August 23 at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

During a recent media interaction organized by the South Delhi Superstarz franchise of the Delhi Premier League, Sangwan shared insights into his rigorous preparation for red-ball cricket. He emphasized the importance of adapting to varying conditions, particularly as an opener facing the new ball. “I focus on preparing during the off-season, practicing in challenging conditions to ensure I am ready for matches,” he explained. He prefers early morning net sessions to simulate match conditions, often facing new balls to enhance his adaptability.

Sangwan expressed his deep affection for red-ball cricket, describing it as his favorite format. “It tests your skill, patience, and fitness. The dynamics can change rapidly, and I enjoy the challenge it presents,” he stated. His approach involves a disciplined batting strategy, where he prioritizes shot selection and patience, particularly in the early stages of his innings.

Influenced by cricketing legends like Virat Kohli and racing champion Lewis Hamilton, Sangwan has adopted a focused mindset in his game. He proudly sports a tattoo inspired by Hamilton's mantra, “Still I Rise.” Reflecting on his experience with Kohli during a Ranji Trophy match, he recalled the impact of sharing a dressing room with his idol, noting Kohli's intense work ethic and humble demeanor off the field.

As he prepares for the Duleep Trophy, Sangwan aims to build on his recent successes and is targeting a 1,000-run season. “I believe a strong foundation allows for versatility across formats. I’m committed to maintaining my form and proving that last season was just the beginning,” he remarked. With a clear vision and determination, Sangwan is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming tournament.
