In a recent analysis, former Indian cricketer
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif emphasized the unique skill set that Kuldeep brings to the team, stating, "From how he was used, it is clear that Shubman Gill doesn't have enough faith in Kuldeep Yadav. You would not get a unique bowler like Kuldeep that often. They come just once or twice in history." He highlighted that while replacements for established players like Ravindra Jadeja may emerge, Kuldeep's distinct abilities are rare and should be nurtured.
Need for Longer Bowling Spells
Kaif further elaborated on the importance of longer bowling spells for wrist-spinners, arguing that they require time to find their rhythm and correct any mistakes. "When you give a bowler a spell, especially a wrist-spinner, you need to give him a long spell. The short spells are not helping Kuldeep. Longer spells give you the chance to rectify mistakes," he explained. This lack of support from Gill, according to Kaif, hindered Kuldeep's performance in the match.
Backing the views of former head coach Ravi Shastri, Kaif asserted that Kuldeep is India's premier spinner in overseas conditions. He noted that while accuracy is essential on turning tracks, Kuldeep's effectiveness shines on flatter pitches where spin is less pronounced. "I feel Kuldeep will play a major role on flat pitches or pitches where there would not be much turn on offer," he stated, urging the captain and management to maintain Kuldeep's confidence.
Potential Changes Ahead
Looking ahead to India's next Test in Colombo starting August 23, Kaif suggested that the team might consider debuting Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Saransh Jain. He pointed out the performance of Sri Lanka's left-handed batsmen, Niroshan Dickwella and Sonal Dinusha, as a factor that could influence the selection of an off-spinner. "Because of Sri Lanka's in-form lefties, maybe Kuldeep will have to face the axe," he remarked, indicating a potential shift in the team's strategy.
Kuldeep, who made his Test debut in 2018, has played 19 matches, taking 80 wickets at an impressive average of 23.36. Despite a challenging year with only four wickets in two Tests at an average exceeding 41, his contributions remain vital to the team's bowling lineup.
