Uncertain Future with the 49ers
Despite Aiyuk's enthusiasm, the 49ers have not indicated any intention to release him. As he remains under contract, the Commanders cannot publicly express interest without risking a violation of NFL tampering rules. San Francisco's general manager, John Lynch, hinted in January that Aiyuk's time with the team might be coming to an end, stating it was "safe to say" he had played his last snap with the Niners. However, the team has yet to make a definitive decision, possibly waiting until the veterans report to training camp on July 25.
Aiyuk's frustration with the 49ers has been evident on social media, where he has criticized the organization. Earlier in June, he referred to the team as "dumb" and "stupid" for their handling of his contract situation, suggesting they were hesitant to release him due to concerns about his potential performance with another team. His desire to play for the Commanders is not new; he has previously shared images of himself wearing a Commanders hat and follows the team on Instagram.
Contract Disputes and Performance History
The 49ers signed Aiyuk to a lucrative four-year, $120 million contract extension in August 2024. However, tensions have escalated over the past year, particularly after the team voided the remaining guaranteed money in his contract due to his absence from rehab sessions following a significant knee injury. Aiyuk was placed on the reserve/left team list in December after he stopped attending team activities. Before his injury, he had established himself as one of the league's top wide receivers, recording 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2023.
