Kyle Shanahan approaches full recovery and intends to lead the team in the upcoming preseason debut.

In Santa Clara, California, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is on the verge of resuming full coaching responsibilities following a serious car accident last month. Shanahan, who suffered a concussion along with three broken ribs and a fractured left hand in the July 14 incident, is set to lead the team during their preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday.

During a recent press conference, Shanahan expressed that he feels nearly at full strength, stating, "As far as the important stuff, I feel it's about 100%." He acknowledged the challenges of recovery, particularly dealing with fatigue and headaches, which have prompted him to adjust his workload. "I really tried to eliminate stuff that I would say is just the fake work stuff," he added, emphasizing the importance of focusing on essential coaching duties.

Gradual Return to Coaching

Shanahan's recovery process has involved delegating some of his responsibilities to assistant head coach Chris Foerster and other coordinators. This strategic move allowed him to concentrate on critical aspects of his role, such as film analysis, collaboration with coaches and players, and participation in team meetings. While he has reduced his involvement in leading team meetings and media interactions, he is optimistic about gradually increasing his presence in these areas.

"I try not to come in here every single day because I feel like if I did, I wouldn't be able to pull off my normal routine, which is watching hours and hours of tape," Shanahan explained. He is eager to return to his usual schedule, which includes extensive film study and practice sessions with the team.

Positive Signs of Recovery

As for his physical condition, Shanahan reported that most of his injuries are healing well. He continues to wear a cast on his left hand but is looking forward to its removal. Although he experiences discomfort in his ribs when sneezing, he noted significant improvement in his overall health. "My head feels so much better," he remarked, acknowledging that while concussion symptoms can linger, he is primarily dealing with headaches and fatigue at this stage of his recovery.

Shanahan's determination to return to full coaching duties reflects his commitment to the team as they prepare for the upcoming season. With each passing day, he moves closer to resuming his role at the helm of the 49ers.
