ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, expressed optimism about his recovery from a left knee injury during a training camp session on Saturday. Reflecting on his progress, Mahomes stated, "It feels great. When you're tired sometimes, you don't even think about [the knee]. I'm trying to protect it, but at the same time trying to push it and get myself ready to go for the season." His comments come after two weeks of rigorous training, where he has increasingly felt confident in his mobility.

Mahomes underwent surgery in December to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee, and he has been focused on regaining his agility and movement within the pocket. As training camp commenced, he identified improving his pocket mobility as a key goal, especially since this was his first experience with 11-on-11 drills since the surgery. "I try to be smart, but there's just sometimes where, in camp, you're trying to compete and practices are long," he noted, emphasizing the competitive nature of training.

Scrambling and Competitiveness

A notable moment during Friday's practice highlighted Mahomes' competitive spirit. In a critical fourth-down situation, he found his passing options limited and opted to scramble. Demonstrating impressive speed, he attempted to reach the first-down marker but was forced to make a lateral pass to rookie running back Kenneth Walker III before being brought down. "I'm trying to hold myself back because I'm just a competitor," Mahomes remarked. "But when it's fourth down, you want to try to make a play happen." Despite the play ending with a turnover, Mahomes reflected on the experience as a learning opportunity.

Following the practice, Mahomes acknowledged that he would approach game situations differently, expressing frustration over not securing the first down. "If I'm not going to be able to scramble and get the first down, I've got to throw the ball and give someone else a chance," he explained. As he continues to adapt to his recovery, Mahomes is determined to enhance his performance and contribute effectively to the team.

Preseason Outlook

As training camp progresses, Mahomes has consistently led the first-team offense through various drills, including an extensive long-drive period orchestrated by head coach Andy Reid. However, Reid indicated that Mahomes is unlikely to participate in the Chiefs' preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams next Saturday. "The percentages are leading that way," Reid stated, suggesting that Mahomes may miss the entire preseason for the first time in his career. In response, Mahomes affirmed his commitment to preparation, saying, "I'm for whatever Coach says. I'll prepare to get myself ready." With the season opener against the Denver Broncos on September 14 approaching, Mahomes remains focused on ensuring he is fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
