LeBron James makes Philadelphia 76ers debut in preseason loss to Nets

LeBron James officially began his tenure with the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday, marking the start of his record-breaking 24th NBA season. The veteran forward logged 18 minutes of action during the 76ers' 114-108 preseason loss to the Brooklyn Nets, providing an early glimpse into how he will integrate with his new teammates.

In his first appearance for Philadelphia, James recorded 10 points, five assists, and four rebounds. While he was credited with only one field goal attempt, he proved effective at the charity stripe, converting all eight of his free-throw opportunities. His performance helped the 76ers secure a 58-56 lead by halftime before the rotation shifted in the second half.

Integrating into a new-look 76ers lineup

The preseason matchup offered the first look at Philadelphia’s revamped starting unit, which featured James alongside fellow newcomer Jaylen Brown, as well as Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe. The group showed signs of cohesion early on, with Maxey contributing 14 points and the starters each recording at least six points during their time on the floor.

Head coach Nick Nurse praised James’ playmaking ability, noting that his passing was on display throughout the first half. One notable sequence saw James facilitate a play that moved the ball through Embiid to Brown for a dunk. Nurse had intended to play his starters for approximately half the game, though Embiid, Brown, and Edgecombe remained on the court to begin the second half.

Adjusting to a new routine

For the 41-year-old, the transition to Philadelphia involves more than just on-court chemistry. After spending the previous eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, James noted that he is currently recalibrating his pre-game and off-court routines to fit his new environment. He emphasized that while the game itself remains familiar, the process of settling into a new city and locker room is an ongoing adjustment.

James signed a two-year deal with the 76ers this past summer. As the team looks ahead, they have two remaining preseason contests scheduled against the Boston Celtics. The 76ers are set to open their regular season on October 20 against the New York Knicks.
