Bordeaux to Compete in French Sixth Tier Following Financial Restructuring

Bordeaux, a club once synonymous with the pinnacle of French football, will begin a new chapter in the sixth tier of the domestic league system. The Nouvelle-Aquitaine league confirmed on Thursday that the six-time French champions have been cleared to participate in the Regional 1 division for the current season following a period of intense financial uncertainty.

The decision follows a successful appearance before the league's oversight commission, which reviewed and approved the club's recovery budget. The commission issued a positive opinion regarding their participation, marking a significant step forward for a side that has faced severe sanctions due to financial irregularities, including a failure to secure the necessary funds for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 financial years.

A New Direction Under Park Bench Ownership

The path to this restart was paved by the club's sale last month to the US-based investment group Park Bench. The transaction, completed for a symbolic one euro, saw the new owners commit to assuming the club's remaining debt. Dominique Delport, the newly appointed president, expressed a sense of optimism regarding the future, stating that the process of rebuilding the storied institution can now officially commence.

As part of the ongoing financial restructuring, the club is scheduled to appear in commercial court on October 20. The objective of this hearing is to ratify a 12-year continuation plan, which aims to reduce the club's debt burden from 26 million euros to 13 million euros. While the team will operate primarily as an amateur outfit, they have been granted permission to retain five players on professional contracts, with former Ligue 1 striker Baptiste Guillaume confirmed as one of the individuals to fill these roles.

From European Heights to Regional Football

The current reality marks a stark contrast to the club's history as a powerhouse of French football. Bordeaux served as the launchpad for Zinedine Zidane, the current head coach of the French national team, and produced legendary academy graduates such as Bixente Lizarazu and Christophe Dugarry, both of whom were instrumental in France's 1998 World Cup triumph. The club’s heritage also includes the celebrated midfield partnership of Alain Giresse and Jean Tigana, who helped lead France to victory in the 1984 European Championships.

The decline began in earnest with their relegation from Ligue 1 in 2022. By 2024, the club had entered judicial restructuring, a process that forced them to relinquish their professional status and dismantle their highly-regarded youth academy. With the approval to compete in the Regional 1 league, the club now looks to stabilize its operations and navigate the long-term recovery plan mandated by the courts.
