New Delhi: As the Indian hockey teams prepare for the upcoming World Cup, a significant controversy has emerged surrounding Hockey India’s recent decision to alter the team’s uniform colors. The federation has introduced a new jersey in a vibrant shade of orange, which they refer to as ‘Saffron.’ This change marks a notable departure from the traditional blue attire that has long been associated with the Indian national team. The new design incorporates subtle patterns inspired by Indian heritage, but the shift has not been well received by fans and former players alike.

Former Indian captain Viren Rasquinha was among the first to voice his concerns on social media, expressing his dismay at the change. “This is embarrassing. The legacy and identity of the Indian team has always been blue. I wore the blue jersey with pride for many years. Fans want to see our Indian team in blue. What is the logic of orange?” he questioned, highlighting the emotional connection many have with the traditional colors.

Another hockey legend, Dhanraj Pillay, also shared his disappointment regarding the uniform change. While he acknowledged the significance of saffron as part of the national flag, he emphasized that the identity of Indian hockey has been closely tied to the blue jersey. “The national team has its unique identity that is different from franchise leagues. Personally, I have never had any issue with blue uniforms on blue turf,” Pillay stated, reinforcing the sentiment that the blue jersey is integral to the team’s heritage.
