Hockey India's Justification for the Change
In unveiling the new jersey design, Hockey India emphasized that the color and style were chosen to "tell a story" and embody "India's pride." The organization stated that the decision was made after consultations with players and support staff. According to Hockey India, saffron represents courage, sacrifice, and victory, and they asserted that no external pressures influenced their choice. They explained that the previous blue uniforms often blended with the blue synthetic playing surfaces now standard in international hockey, which could hinder visibility and clarity for players during matches.
Despite Hockey India's rationale, the decision has faced backlash from several former captains, including Viren Rasquinha, who questioned the logic behind the change. Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey revealed that he was not informed about the decision prior to its announcement. However, Secretary Bhola Nath Singh countered this claim, asserting that all officials were aware of the jersey change.
