Max Verstappen Secures First Pole Position of 2026 at Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia

Max Verstappen secured his first pole position of the 2026 season during qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix, currently being hosted at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia. The Red Bull driver set the pace with a commanding performance, finishing 0.298 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. This result marks a significant breakthrough for Verstappen, who is aiming to maintain his record of winning at least one race every season since his debut in 2015.

The qualifying session proved to be a difficult outing for the Mercedes team, which had dominated every pole position session leading up to this event. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli could only manage fourth place, while his teammate and title rival, George Russell, finished in eighth. Both Mercedes drivers are expected to gain one position on the starting grid due to a five-place penalty handed to Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, who qualified third but exceeded his seasonal engine allocation.

A Shift in Momentum at Sepang

Verstappen’s performance was particularly notable as it represented the first pole position of the year for a car not powered by a Mercedes engine. Reflecting on the session, the Dutchman expressed satisfaction with his car's balance and his own confidence behind the wheel, noting that the result was an incredible outcome given the team's challenges throughout the season. He remains hopeful that this pace will translate into a strong race result on Sunday.

For Lewis Hamilton, the front-row start provided a much-needed boost following a recent period of difficult results for Ferrari. The seven-time world champion was visibly relieved over the team radio, exclaiming that the result was a long-awaited success. Meanwhile, the Mercedes camp faced significant hurdles regarding the abrasive nature of the Sepang track. George Russell highlighted that the extreme heat and rough tarmac were causing severe tyre overheating, an issue that appeared to impact the Mercedes cars more heavily than their competitors.

Context of the Malaysian Event

The race at the Sepang Circuit marks the first time Formula 1 has returned to the venue since 2017. The event is serving as a replacement for the original Bahrain and Saudi Arabian rounds, which were cancelled earlier this year due to the conflict in Iran. Despite the change in location, the event retains its official Bahrain Grand Prix branding, with Bahraini personnel managing the operations on the ground. While heavy rain had been forecasted earlier in the week, the track remained dry throughout Saturday's sessions, allowing for a consistent test of pace and tyre management.
