The
This initiative, powered by Recast’s revenue-sharing technology, enables fans to access live matches through pay-per-view options on SPL-owned channels. Alternatively, viewers can gain free access by engaging with brand-sponsored content. The model is specifically designed to democratise access to the league, particularly in regions where traditional broadcast coverage may be limited.
Expanding Reach Through the Creator Economy
The new distribution framework allows RSL players and independent content creators to promote specific matches or bundles via their own digital platforms. In return, these partners receive a share of the revenue generated through their efforts. By integrating third-party platforms into its network, the SPL aims to foster deeper connections with international audiences who increasingly consume sports through digital communities and trusted creators.
The initial rollout covers 16 markets, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, and several European nations such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Serbia, Malta, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Cyprus, and Greece. This move complements the league’s existing broadcast network, which currently spans over 180 territories through partnerships with major entities like ESPN, DAZN, and FOX.
Strategic Growth and Digital Innovation
Omar Mugharbel, CEO of the Saudi Pro League, highlighted that the initiative reflects a shift in how sports are discovered and consumed. By moving away from a strictly rights-holder-to-broadcaster relationship, the league intends to build direct relationships with fans and gather valuable first-party insights. This data-driven approach is expected to help the SPL better understand emerging fan bases and tailor its growth strategy accordingly.
This development aligns with the SPL’s broader transformation strategy, which was initiated in early 2023 as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The league remains focused on elevating its global standing by nurturing talent, improving governance, and fostering competitiveness. As the global creator economy continues to grow—a sector currently valued at approximately USD 388 billion—the SPL is positioning itself to capitalise on new digital trends to secure its long-term international footprint.
