Sanju Samson shines as India seals T20I series victory against Afghanistan

Sanju Samson delivered a timely reminder of his explosive potential on Tuesday night, powering India to a seven-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the second T20I. His aggressive 57 off just 22 deliveries effectively neutralized the opposition's bowling attack, ensuring India clinched the three-match series with a clinical display in New Delhi.

Chasing a target of 160, India reached the required total in just 14.5 overs. Samson’s knock, which featured seven boundaries and four sixes, set the tone for the chase and allowed Ishan to play a supporting role, finishing unbeaten on 38 off 23 balls. The victory was set up by a disciplined bowling effort that restricted Afghanistan to 159/8 on a sluggish surface.

Samson and Abhishek dominate the Powerplay

The opening partnership between Samson and Abhishek Sharma proved to be the decisive factor in the contest. The duo put together 88 runs in just 6.2 overs, dismantling Afghanistan's renowned spin attack, which included the likes of Rashid Khan, Mohammed Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Noor Ahmad. Despite the pitch showing signs of turn, Samson’s aggressive approach ensured the required run rate remained well within control.

Abhishek Sharma contributed a brisk 39 off 19 balls before he was dismissed at deep mid-wicket. While Samson eventually fell to Rashid Khan near the long-off boundary, the damage had already been done. The performance was a significant turnaround for Samson, who had faced scrutiny following a difficult tour of the UK two months prior.

Bowling depth and series context

Earlier in the match, Nitish Kumar Reddy provided a boost for the Indian team management by claiming 3/24 in his three-over spell. His performance offered a positive development in the search for a reliable seam-bowling all-rounder in the white-ball format. The Indian bowlers successfully managed the conditions, keeping the Afghanistan lineup in check throughout their innings.

With the series now secured, attention turns to the final T20I scheduled for Thursday. The team management faces a decision regarding the inclusion of 16-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who had been brought into the squad following recent selection shifts. For now, the form shown by Samson and Abhishek has solidified their positions at the top of the order, leaving the younger talent to continue pushing for a spot in the starting XI.
