Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo sidelined for eight weeks

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed a significant injury blow, revealing that forward Antoine Semenyo is expected to be sidelined for up to eight weeks. The Ghana international picked up the leg injury during City’s recent 3-2 Premier League victory against Ipswich Town, a result that maintained the club's perfect start to the domestic campaign with seven wins from seven matches.

The news comes as the league leaders prepare for a crucial Champions League fixture against AEK Athens at the Etihad Stadium. While Maresca provided a positive update on the fitness of several other key squad members, including Erling Haaland, Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes, and Nico O'Reilly, the prognosis for Semenyo remains the most concerning. Despite the initial worry, the manager noted that recent scans indicated the injury was not as severe as the club had originally feared.

Managing squad depth and upcoming fixtures

Addressing the media ahead of the European clash, Maresca expressed his disappointment at losing a player of Semenyo’s versatility. The forward had been viewed as a potential option to lead the line, but the manager remains focused on his primary attacking setup. Regarding star striker Erling Haaland, who was observed limping following the Ipswich match, Maresca stated that the player’s availability would be determined following a final training session.

Maresca, who has made history as the first manager to win his opening seven Premier League games at a new club, emphasized that he is not currently looking for alternative solutions at center-forward while Haaland remains fit. The team is now shifting its focus to the Champions League, where they are looking to bounce back from a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in their previous outing. The manager dismissed any suggestion of resting players to avoid injury, insisting that the squad will field their strongest available lineup to secure a vital victory in Europe.
