India’s Rakshita Raju Disqualified in Women’s 1500m T11 at Asian Para Games

A dramatic turn of events at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya saw India’s Rakshita Raju stripped of her bronze medal in the Women’s 1500m T11 final on Monday. Raju, who competed alongside her guide Tabres Khan, had initially crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 5:31.45s.

However, officials disqualified the athlete following the race due to a violation of rule TR6.9, which pertains to non-compliance regarding clothing, shoes, and bibs. As a result of the disqualification, her teammate Ravanni Valasanani, who had originally finished fourth with a time of 5:41.85s alongside guide Rahul Balakrishna, was elevated to the podium to claim the bronze medal.

Dominant Performances and Medal Haul for India

While the T11 event saw a shuffle in the standings, India celebrated success in other track events. In the Women’s 1500m T12/T13 final, Soumya and Radha Venkatesh secured a one-two finish. Soumya, guided by Bharath Kumar, claimed the gold medal with a time of 5:12.39s, earning 621 Raza points. Radha, guided by Govind Solanki, followed closely to take silver with a time of 5:30.90s and 421 Raza points. Japan’s Mana Sasaki took the bronze in that event with 336 Raza points.

The Raza point system remains a critical component of these Games, providing a mathematical framework to compare and rank athletes across different disability classifications to ensure fair competition. The Chinese duo of He Shanshan and Huang Zengli dominated the T11 race, securing gold and silver respectively.

Success in Field Events

India’s medal tally in para-athletics continued to grow with strong performances in the field. Rinku clinched gold in the Men’s Javelin F46 category with a throw of 65.11 metres, while Ajeet Singh secured the silver medal with a distance of 65.02 metres, finishing just 9 centimetres behind his compatriot. These results build on the earlier success of Nishad Kumar, who claimed gold in the long jump with a best effort of 7.11m during his debut at the event.
