Bruno Guimaraes Joins Arsenal, Calls Departure from Newcastle His 'Hardest Choice'

Arsenal Football Club has officially confirmed the acquisition of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a transfer deal valued at approximately £75 million (around Rs. 963 crore). The 28-year-old player is expected to significantly enhance Arsenal's midfield, which is already regarded as one of the strongest in Europe.

Guimaraes began his professional journey with Audax in Brazil in 2015, later moving to Athletico Paranaense in 2017. His career took a pivotal turn when he joined Lyon in January 2020, where he showcased his talent over two successful seasons in Ligue 1. Although Arsenal expressed interest in signing him in January 2022, Guimaraes ultimately chose to join Newcastle United. During his four-and-a-half-year tenure at St James’ Park, he made nearly 200 appearances and played a crucial role in helping the team secure the Carabao Cup in 2025.

International Experience and Leadership Qualities

As a seasoned international player, Guimaraes has earned 48 caps for Brazil, participating in prestigious tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and Copa America, and he was part of the squad that clinched Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2020. Arsenal's Sporting Director, Andrea Berta, expressed enthusiasm about the signing, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Bruno Guimaraes to our club. He possesses a great mentality and quality, which will enhance our squad's leadership. His versatility as both a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box player will be invaluable.”

Berta further emphasized that Guimaraes' addition would not only bolster the team's core but also foster internal competition, a vital aspect for a club aspiring to win major trophies. Guimaraes will don the number 39 jersey at Arsenal, marking the conclusion of a complex transfer saga that unfolded over the summer months, capturing significant media attention.

A Fond Farewell to Newcastle

In a heartfelt message to Newcastle fans, Guimaraes reflected on his time at the club, stating, “This is one of the toughest decisions of my life. I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together. I fell in love with this place.” He acknowledged the support he received from fans, teammates, and staff, expressing gratitude for the sense of belonging he felt during his time there. Despite the emotional weight of his departure, Guimaraes expressed excitement for the new challenges that await him at Arsenal, having had a positive conversation with the club's management.
