South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has credited the influence of Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar for his career-best performance in the second Test against Australia. The skipper produced a masterful 179-run innings at St George's Park, a knock that proved instrumental in steering the hosts from a precarious 110/6 to a commanding total of 425/9 declared.

The innings, which spanned 334 balls, surpassed Bavuma’s previous Test high of 172 recorded against the West Indies in 2023. Reflecting on his technical approach, the 36-year-old explained that he consciously mirrors Tendulkar’s style, particularly regarding movement and the ability to play the ball close to the body. He noted that as a smaller player, he prioritizes efficiency over expansive strides, a method he believes serves his game best despite the occasional risks involved.

A Tactical Turnaround at St George's Park

Bavuma admitted that the innings provided a significant sense of personal satisfaction, especially after struggling to find his rhythm during the preceding ODI series and the opening Test of the current campaign. He described the challenge of entering the crease early and the mental shift required to convert a start into a substantial, match-defining score. Having failed to make a meaningful impact in the first match of the series, the captain expressed relief at being able to deliver a significant contribution when his team needed it most.

The recovery was not a solo effort, as Bavuma received vital support from the lower order. Marco Jansen contributed a brave 85, while Simon Harmer added 82, forming a crucial 183-run partnership with the captain. Bavuma praised both players for their application and composure under pressure, noting that Harmer was particularly unfortunate to fall short of a century. With the batting unit having successfully navigated the threat of Australia’s high-ranked bowling attack, the South African leader emphasized that the focus has now shifted to his bowlers to capitalize on the platform established by the top and middle order.
