Navicha powers Mozambique to competitive total

Mozambique secured a vital 28-run victory over Gambia in Match 4 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Africa Sub Regional Qualifier C, held at the NCF Oval 1 in Abuja. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Mozambique posted a challenging total of 148/6 from their allotted 20 overs, anchored by a dominant display from Agostinho Navicha.

Navicha was the standout performer with the bat, striking a rapid 61 off just 31 balls to provide the necessary momentum for his side. He found strong support from Vieira Tembo, who contributed a valuable 32 off 22 deliveries. While Mozambique maintained a steady scoring rate, Gambia’s bowlers managed to keep the pressure on at intervals, with Andre Jarju proving the most effective, finishing with figures of 2/22 from his 1.4 overs.

Gambia falters in pursuit of 149

Chasing 149 for victory, Gambia’s innings got off to a disastrous start. The tone was set early when Aniru Conteh fell with the score at just 5 runs in the opening over, a moment that proved to be the turning point of the contest. The early loss of three wickets left Gambia struggling to find their rhythm against a disciplined Mozambique bowling attack.

Despite the top-order collapse, David Demba attempted to anchor the chase, scoring a defiant 45 off 29 balls. Supported by Frank Campbell, Demba tried to keep Gambia in the hunt, but the required run rate proved too steep as the innings progressed. Mozambique’s bowlers remained composed, restricting their opponents to 120/8 by the end of the 20 overs. Alongside Navicha’s match-winning batting performance, Vieira Tembo and Charles Mbebe were also highlighted for their contributions in securing the win for Mozambique.
