Ishan Kishan eyes trio of T20 milestones in upcoming New Zealand series

Ishan Kishan heads into India's five-match T20I series against New Zealand with a series of significant batting milestones within his reach. The opening encounter in Christchurch on Thursday serves as the starting point for the wicketkeeper-batter to potentially rewrite the record books as he continues a standout year in the shortest format of the game.

The left-hander has been a pivotal figure in India's T20I setup throughout the year, accumulating 1,158 runs across 34 innings. With an impressive average of 37.35 and a strike rate of 172.06, he has already registered one century and seven half-centuries. He currently sits just seven runs shy of surpassing Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian record of 1,164 T20I runs in a calendar year, a mark set in 2022.

Chasing international and domestic landmarks

Beyond the national record, Kishan is eyeing a broader international achievement. He remains 139 runs away from eclipsing the record for the most T20I runs in a calendar year by a batter from a Test-playing nation, currently held by Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, who scored 1,326 runs in 2021. Furthermore, the 25-year-old is closing in on a career milestone, requiring only 46 more runs to become the seventh Indian player to reach 2,000 career T20I runs. To date, he has amassed 1,954 runs in 66 matches at an average of 31.51 and a strike rate of 148.81.

The ambition extends to the broader T20 landscape as well. Having scored 1,760 runs in 49 T20 matches this year at a strike rate exceeding 175, Kishan is 240 runs away from becoming the first Indian to reach 2,000 T20 runs in a single calendar year. Only two players have previously achieved this feat: West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran, who tallied 2,331 runs in 2024, and Rizwan, who reached 2,036 runs in 2021. With the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand and a subsequent three-match series against Sri Lanka in December, Kishan has ample opportunity to pursue these targets before the conclusion of the year.
