Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has suggested that pacer Mohammed Shami could be nearing a return to the national squad, drawing parallels to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s recent successful recall to the international setup.

Suresh Raina Tips Mohammed Shami for Potential India Comeback

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has hinted that fast bowler Mohammed Shami could be on the verge of a return to the national team. Speaking at the jersey launch for the Indian Soft Ball Cricket League, Raina expressed optimism regarding Shami’s prospects, suggesting that the experienced pacer is working his way back into contention following a period of domestic participation.

Raina’s comments come in the wake of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s notable return to the Indian side at the age of 36. Praising Bhuvneshwar’s dedication, Raina highlighted the discipline and physical commitment required to earn a recall at that stage of a career. Drawing a comparison between the two bowlers, Raina noted that just as Bhuvneshwar has successfully navigated his way back, Shami is also making progress behind the scenes.

Shami’s Path to Potential Recall

Mohammed Shami’s last appearance for India occurred during the 2025 Champions Trophy, while his most recent Test match was the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. Since those outings, the bowler has focused on domestic cricket and is currently slated to represent Bengal in the opening match of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. Despite his experience, Shami has faced challenges in the Indian Premier League, recording 18 wickets across 22 matches during the 2025 and 2026 seasons with an economy rate of 10 runs per over.

In contrast, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has recently demonstrated the effectiveness of precision and swing, particularly in the shortest format. During the 2025 and 2026 IPL seasons, Bhuvneshwar proved his value by claiming 25 wickets during the PowerPlay and 18 wickets in the death overs. His performance in the 2026 IPL was particularly standout, as he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker with 28 scalps at an economy rate of 8.07, playing a pivotal role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s consecutive title victories.

Raina’s endorsement serves as a reminder of the value placed on experience and sustained fitness in the national selection process. While Shami’s recent T20 statistics have been a point of concern, his continued involvement in domestic cricket keeps his name in the conversation. As the Indian team looks to balance its bowling attack, the potential return of a seasoned campaigner like Shami remains a subject of interest for supporters and selectors alike.
