Robert Saleh Reaffirms Cam Ward as Titans Starting Quarterback Despite Offensive Struggles

Tennessee Titans head coach Robert Saleh has publicly backed Cam Ward as the team's starting quarterback, despite a dismal offensive showing in Sunday's 26-3 loss to the Houston Texans. The defeat extended the Titans' winless start to the season, leaving the team at 0-5 and highlighting significant struggles within the offensive unit.

Addressing the media following the lopsided result in Nashville, Saleh remained committed to the young signal-caller. He emphasized that the coaching staff intends to provide Ward with every possible opportunity to develop and succeed throughout the remainder of the campaign, noting that the team will continue to work closely with him to address his current shortcomings.

Offensive Struggles and Statistical Trends

The performance against Houston was particularly concerning, as the Titans were held to just three points—their lowest scoring output since a 25-3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 13 of the previous season. Ward finished the game completing 23 of 36 passes for 170 yards, while also throwing an interception.

The team's offensive output has been a persistent issue throughout the year. Tennessee currently sits at the bottom of the NFL rankings in both total yards per game, averaging 246.4, and points per game, managing only 14. A major factor in these struggles has been an inability to generate explosive plays; against the Texans, Ward averaged only 2.9 air yards per completion and connected on just two of his attempts of 10 yards or more.

Ward Addresses Criticism and Future Outlook

Since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick last season, Ward has struggled with downfield accuracy. He has completed only 39.6% of his passes thrown 10 or more yards, which currently stands as the lowest percentage in the league over that timeframe. Despite the mounting pressure and the team's poor form, Ward expressed confidence in his process and his ability to eventually turn things around.

Speaking on the challenges of the position, Ward acknowledged that he is prepared to accept the criticism that comes with being an NFL quarterback. He stated that he remains focused on the sacrifices required to reach his potential and help the organization win games. The Titans are now facing a difficult stretch, having failed to secure a victory in their last 11 AFC South divisional matchups, marking the longest active losing streak within a division in the NFL.
