India took a crucial 2-1 lead in the five-match T20I series against West Indies after successfully defending a formidable total at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. In a high-scoring encounter, India posted 223 all out in their 20 overs, a score that ultimately proved just enough to secure a 14-run victory as the visitors fell short in their pursuit of the 224-run target.

West Indies captain won the toss and elected to field, hoping to restrict the hosts on a surface that promised runs. However, India’s top order came out with aggressive intent from the first ball. Abhishek Sharma was the standout performer, dismantling the bowling attack with a blistering 69 off just 30 balls. His ability to find the boundary consistently provided the momentum India needed to set a challenging pace.

Supporting the charge, Ishan Kishan contributed a vital 37 off 18 balls, ensuring the scoring rate remained high throughout the powerplay and middle overs. Despite a disciplined effort from Roston Chase, who finished as the pick of the West Indies bowlers with figures of 2/38 from his four overs, India managed to maintain pressure until they were eventually bowled out on the final ball of their innings.

West Indies chase falls short despite late resistance

Facing a daunting target of 224, the West Indies innings suffered an immediate setback. The turning point arrived early when Shai Hope fell with the score at just 7 runs in 1.5 overs. This early breakthrough allowed the Indian bowlers to dictate terms and put the visitors on the back foot from the outset.

While the required run rate continued to climb, Shimron Hetmyer provided a glimmer of hope for the tourists, striking a defiant 43 off 26 balls. Supported by Kamil Pooran, who looked to accelerate in the middle stages, West Indies attempted to keep the required rate within reach. However, the Indian bowling unit, led by an impactful performance from Arshdeep Singh, remained composed under pressure.

Despite the best efforts of the middle order, the West Indies were unable to sustain the necessary momentum to overhaul the target, finishing their 20 overs on 209/7. The 14-run margin reflected India's ability to hold their nerve during the death overs, ensuring they head into the remainder of the series with a narrow but significant advantage.
