Sunil Gavaskar Backs Jasprit Bumrah’s Inclusion for Asian Games Squad

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has voiced his support for the inclusion of premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah in India’s squad for the upcoming Asian Games. The veteran analyst believes the tournament serves as an ideal platform for the pacer to regain his rhythm and match fitness following a lengthy injury layoff.

Bumrah has been sidelined from international cricket since July, when he sustained an impact injury to his left knee during the second ODI against England in Cardiff. While he has been named in the squad for the T20I series against Afghanistan, his participation remains contingent upon receiving final medical clearance. Gavaskar views the Asian Games as a strategic opportunity for the bowler to secure necessary overs before the team’s subsequent tour of New Zealand.

The Importance of Match Fitness

Highlighting the necessity of competitive exposure, Gavaskar pointed to the recent struggles of other bowlers who lacked sufficient game time. He noted that Mohammad Siraj’s performance in Sri Lanka appeared to suffer due to a lack of recent competitive matches, underscoring the importance of bowlers getting overs under their belts. According to Gavaskar, the gap between the Asian Games and the New Zealand series makes the former an essential environment for Bumrah to build his workload.

Addressing the leadership aspect of the squad, Gavaskar also offered his backing to Shreyas Iyer, despite the captain’s recent record of six losses in seven T20Is this year. The former skipper dismissed concerns regarding pressure on Iyer, citing his extensive experience leading various franchises in the Indian Premier League, including Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings.

Challenges and Opportunities in the Tournament

While optimistic about the squad's preparation, Gavaskar cautioned that India’s title defence will be far from straightforward. He identified the high level of competition in the T20 format, specifically highlighting the threat posed by in-form Bangladesh, the unpredictable nature of Pakistan, and the strength of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

Beyond the tactical benefits for senior players, Gavaskar emphasized the broader value of the event for younger talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He noted that the Asian Games provide a unique environment for athletes to interact with peers from diverse sporting disciplines across the continent. For a young player like Sooryavanshi, Gavaskar expressed hope that the experience of rubbing shoulders with established athletes would serve as a significant source of inspiration.
