Kusal Mendis masterclass leads Sri Lanka to consolation win in Rawalpindi

Mendis leads the charge in comfortable chase

Sri Lanka finished their tour of Pakistan on a high note, securing a convincing eight-wicket victory in the third T20I at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. While Pakistan claimed the three-match series 2-1, the visitors dominated the final encounter, successfully chasing down a target of 169 with ease.

The chase began with a slight stutter when Lahiru Udara fell early, leaving Sri Lanka at 15/1 in just 1.1 overs. However, any hopes of a Pakistan comeback were quickly extinguished by Kusal Mendis. Playing with aggression and precision, Mendis anchored the innings with a brilliant 87 off 48 balls. Supported by Kamindu Mendis, the pair ensured the required run rate never became an issue, steering Sri Lanka to 172/2 and sealing the win with time to spare.

Shanaka shines as Pakistan restricted

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that paid dividends as his bowlers kept the Pakistan lineup in check. Shanaka led from the front with the ball, delivering a disciplined spell to finish with figures of 3/21 from his four overs. His ability to take wickets at key intervals prevented Pakistan from building the momentum needed to post a truly imposing total.

Pakistan’s innings was largely built on the back of Sahibzada Farhan, who provided the backbone of the total with a fluent 76 off 47 balls. Arafat Minhas offered valuable support, contributing 34 off 20 balls to help push the score to 168/8. Despite these efforts, the lack of a substantial partnership in the middle and late overs meant Pakistan fell short of a score that would have truly tested the Sri Lankan batting order on a good batting surface.

Alongside Shanaka’s match-defining spell, Nuwan Thushara provided excellent support, ensuring the pressure remained on the hosts throughout the first innings. The result provides a positive conclusion for Sri Lanka, who will take confidence from their clinical performance in the final match of the series.
