Shreyas Iyer welcomes Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to India T20I squad

Indian T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has expressed his confidence in the return of veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, noting that the experienced campaigner will provide a much-needed boost to the national side. As India prepares for a five-match T20I series against New Zealand in Christchurch, the inclusion of the 36-year-old pacer is seen as a strategic move to stabilize a bowling attack that has recently relied on younger, less experienced options.

Bhuvneshwar’s return to the international fold follows a period of sustained success in the Indian Premier League, where he played a pivotal role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s consecutive title wins in 2025 and 2026. During this two-year span, the bowler claimed 45 wickets in 31 matches, maintaining an average of 22.55 and an economy rate of 8.52. His most recent IPL campaign was particularly standout, as he finished as the tournament's second-highest wicket-taker with 28 scalps at an average of 17.89.

Bolstering the bowling attack with experience

Addressing the media ahead of the series opener, Iyer emphasized the value of having a seasoned professional back in the mix. The captain noted that the team had been searching for the kind of tactical maturity that Bhuvneshwar possesses, especially following the influx of new talent into the squad. According to Iyer, the veteran’s recent domestic form proves he has a clear understanding of how to dominate the shortest format of the game.

The pacer currently holds a strong international record, having taken 90 wickets in 87 T20Is for India at an average of 23.10, including two five-wicket hauls. He is currently on the cusp of a significant personal milestone, sitting just 10 wickets away from becoming the fifth Indian bowler to reach 100 T20I wickets. Furthermore, with 294 international wickets across all formats, he is only six dismissals away from joining the elite group of 13 Indian bowlers who have achieved 300 career wickets.

Adapting to New Zealand conditions

Looking ahead to the challenge posed by the hosts, Iyer acknowledged that the Indian batting lineup will face a rigorous test against New Zealand’s pace-oriented bowling attack. The captain stressed the necessity of rapid acclimatization to local conditions, noting that while he has played in the country before, the nature of the pitches remains a variable that requires careful planning.

Iyer stated that the team intends to utilize their scheduled practice sessions to finalize their approach. By assessing the surface conditions early, the squad aims to develop a cohesive strategy to counter the expected pace threat. The upcoming series serves as a critical opportunity for the team to integrate their returning veteran while testing their adaptability against a formidable opponent on their home soil.
