Shreyas Iyer Urges Patience for Rising Talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

India T20 captain Shreyas Iyer has emphasised the importance of patience regarding the development of 15-year-old prospect Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Despite the teenager's rapid ascent in the cricketing ranks, Iyer maintains that he is not yet ready for a permanent spot in the starting XI, given the consistent form of the current opening pair.

The national side continues to rely on the established combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson at the top of the order. This duo played a pivotal role in India’s successful T20 World Cup title defence earlier this year, and according to the captain, their ongoing contributions make it difficult to justify immediate changes to the lineup.

Managing Expectations for a Young Talent

Speaking ahead of the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, Iyer addressed the media regarding the youngster's role within the squad. He stressed that while Sooryavanshi is an exciting talent, there is no need to rush his integration into the international setup. The captain highlighted that the dressing room environment is the best place for the teenager to learn while he awaits his turn.

Iyer noted that Sooryavanshi has many years ahead of him to secure a regular place in the side. He explained that the current opening pair’s track record and consistent scoring output provide a stable foundation that the team is not looking to disrupt at this stage. The captain’s message was clear: the youngster should remain focused and comfortable while continuing to gain experience in the team environment.

Gaining Experience Through Overseas Tours

Sooryavanshi’s journey with the national team has seen him included in squads for tours of England and Ireland earlier this year. Although he has featured in eight of India’s 21 T20Is since those tours, his appearances have been limited by the preference for the Sharma-Samson partnership. One notable exception occurred during the Asian Games, where the team structure was adjusted to allow the teenager to open, with Samson shifting down to the No. 3 position.

Iyer believes that the value of these tours lies in the exposure to diverse playing conditions rather than immediate selection. By travelling with the squad, Sooryavanshi is gaining a better understanding of how to adapt to different wickets. The captain expressed confidence that this preparation will serve the youngster well in the future, noting that the experience will eventually allow him to provide valuable insights to his teammates when playing in similar conditions down the line.
