Shreyas Iyer credits mentor Abhishek Nayar for technical adjustments after match-winning century

India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer made a spectacular return to form in the opening match against West Indies in Lucknow, smashing an unbeaten 102 from just 43 deliveries. The explosive innings, which featured 10 fours and six sixes, propelled India to a commanding eight-wicket victory and marked a significant turnaround for the skipper following a challenging period in white-ball cricket.

Prior to this performance, Iyer had struggled to find his rhythm, failing to surpass 30 runs in his previous 10 T20I innings. This slump extended through the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, where he recorded scores of 13 and 21 in the semi-final and final respectively. Seeking to address his dip in form, the captain turned to his long-time friend and mentor, Abhishek Nayar, for technical guidance.

Technical adjustments spark return to form

The collaboration between the two began shortly after Iyer returned to Mumbai from the Asian Games. Nayar, the current head coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, visited the batter at his home in Worli for an intensive two-hour session. According to Nayar, the primary issue was not a lack of confidence, but rather a loss of the specific feel required for Iyer to execute his trademark power hitting.

Nayar revealed that he analyzed historical footage of the batter to identify discrepancies between his current technique and his most successful periods. The pair focused on making subtle but impactful alterations to Iyer’s grip, his initial movement at the crease, and his backlift. These adjustments were designed to restore the natural rhythm and momentum that had previously defined his batting style.

Iyer praises the impact of the mentorship

Reflecting on his century in a video released by the BCCI, Iyer noted that the conversation with Nayar was instrumental in his success. He highlighted that the ability to set himself properly before the delivery of the ball was the key takeaway from their discussion. By focusing on his preparation, he was able to regain the timing and power that had been missing from his game.

Since taking over the T20I captaincy earlier this year, Iyer has accumulated 511 runs across 17 innings. His current record stands at an average of 39.30 with a strike rate exceeding 149, a tally that now includes one century and two half-centuries. With his technical foundation restored, the captain appears to have successfully navigated his recent slump as India continues its international campaign.
