Shreyas Iyer Smashes Unbeaten Century to Lead India to T20I Victory

Indian captain Shreyas Iyer delivered a masterclass in aggressive batting on Tuesday evening in Lucknow, steering his side to a commanding eight-wicket victory over the West Indies. Chasing a target of 172, the skipper anchored the innings with a spectacular unbeaten 102, reaching the milestone from just 43 deliveries to seal the result in emphatic fashion.

The innings was defined by its sheer efficiency and power, featuring 10 fours and six sixes. By reaching triple figures during a successful run chase, Iyer etched his name into the record books as the first Indian captain to achieve a century while batting second in a T20 International.

A New Milestone for Indian Leadership

Iyer’s performance saw him surpass the previous benchmark for an Indian captain in a T20I chase, which was held by Virat Kohli. Kohli had previously recorded an unbeaten 94 from 50 balls against the West Indies in Hyderabad back in 2019. With this century, Iyer also joins an elite group as only the third Indian captain to score a T20I hundred, following in the footsteps of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, who have both achieved the feat three times.

While Iyer’s knock was undoubtedly historic for Indian cricket, it also stands as one of the most explosive displays of captaincy in the format’s history. His strike rate of 237.2 during the innings highlights the clinical nature of his approach, placing his 102 not out seventh on the all-time list for the highest scores by a captain in a T20I chase.

Global Context and Records

Despite the brilliance of the performance, the overall record for the highest score by a captain in a T20I chase remains with Pakistan’s Babar Azam. Azam set the standard with an unbeaten 122 from 59 balls against South Africa in Centurion in 2021. That mark was subsequently equalled by Singapore captain Aritra Dutta, who produced an identical score of 122 against Japan in Bangkok earlier in 2024.

Iyer’s innings in Lucknow serves as a significant boost for the Indian side, demonstrating both his individual form and his ability to lead from the front under pressure. As the series progresses, the focus will remain on whether the Indian captain can maintain this level of intensity in the upcoming fixtures.
