Preparing for Spin Challenges
The pitch, resembling a Day 4 surface from the recently concluded warm-up game, was designed to simulate conditions expected in the forthcoming series. With its dry surface and visible cracks, batting from a single end became increasingly challenging as the session progressed, mirroring the difficulties faced in a Test match. A variety of balls were utilized, including old, new, and semi-new ones, to enhance the practice experience. Nabi, in particular, bowled with great determination, while the other fast bowlers—Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar, and Prasidh Krishna—took a well-deserved break after the multi-day fixture.
Captain Shubman Gill recognized that one fast bowler would not suffice for adequate practice, so he opted to work in the nets with throwdown specialists and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. The strategy was straightforward: face one new ball and two older ones, preparing for potential reverse swing. Gill appeared largely in control, aside from a few deliveries that either rose unexpectedly or kept low. Encouraging shouts of “shot, Gill” and “well left, Gill” filled the air as he transitioned to the center wicket alongside India’s No. 3, Devdutt Padikkal.
Team Bonding and Preparation
As each Indian batter adjusted to the challenging surface, they were allowed to unleash their skills towards the end of the session. The three-hour practice included a mix of solid defenses, tentative prods, and an array of sweeps and reverse sweeps. Amidst the drills and strategies, moments of camaraderie emerged, with Ravindra Jadeja showcasing his new bat sticker inspired by his pet horse, while Sarfaraz proudly displayed his improved fitness. The Bengaluru duo of Padikkal and KL Rahul enjoyed each other’s company, and the massage table was busy as players took turns stretching after their sessions.
For the past six days, the Indian team has been training daily at the NCC Ground in Colombo, balancing multi-day fixtures with net sessions at varying times. This rigorous preparation aims to ensure the team is ready before heading to Galle for the series opener on August 15. The squad is scheduled to arrive in Galle on August 11, with three additional practice sessions planned before the first match at the historic
