Ayush Prepares to Compete Against Top-Ranked Shi at Badminton World Championships, Dismissing Pressure as 'Just Another Match'

As the Badminton World Championships approach, anticipation builds around Ayush Shetty, who faces a formidable challenge in his opening match. The 21-year-old Indian player, making his debut in this prestigious tournament, has drawn World No. 1 Shi Yu Qi, a matchup that many consider the toughest among all Indian singles competitors.

Shetty's previous encounters with Shi have not been favorable, as he has lost all three matches against the Chinese star, including a recent defeat in the final of the Asian Championships. Despite these setbacks, Shetty remains optimistic. “When I saw Shi in the draw, I immediately told myself that I was ready to face anyone. Being unseeded, I was prepared to take on the World No. 1. It’s just another match, although I know it will be a really tough battle,” he shared during an online interaction.

In the face of adversity, Shetty exudes confidence. He has meticulously analyzed their past meetings and feels prepared for this significant rematch. “Shi is a really tough opponent. I remember our match in the Asian Championships final; he was exceptionally well-prepared. However, I believe I have improved since then, and I will be better equipped this time. I need to be tactically sharper,” he explained.

Shetty draws encouragement from his recent performances in the Thomas Cup and Asian Championships, acknowledging that the World Championships represent a higher level of competition. “It’s a good challenge, and I’m ready for it,” he stated, emphasizing his determination to rise to the occasion.

This year marks the second consecutive time an Indian player will face Shi in the opening round, following Lakshya Sen's defeat to the same opponent last year. Sen, however, managed to avenge that loss earlier this year at the All England Championships. As Shi prepares to defend his title, he has not been at his peak performance in recent weeks, which could provide Shetty with an opportunity to create an upset.

Shetty also addressed his recent elbow injury, which had caused him some discomfort. “I had some pain earlier, but now it’s all good. I’ll be at 100% during the Worlds,” he assured, signaling his readiness to compete at the highest level.
