Rohit Sharma shines with five-wicket haul as Jammu and Kashmir dominate Madhya Pradesh

Defending Ranji Trophy champions Jammu and Kashmir made a commanding start to their 2026-27 season on Sunday, dismantling Madhya Pradesh for 196 on the opening day of their clash at the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar. The hosts, who secured their maiden title earlier this year, showcased their bowling depth to seize early control of the match.

The highlight of the day was the return of fast bowler Rohit Sharma, who marked his first Ranji Trophy appearance in nearly two years with a devastating spell. The 32-year-old, who had not featured in the competition since a wicketless outing against Services in October 2024, proved instrumental by claiming 5/36 from his 21.2 overs. This performance marks only the second time in his first-class career that he has taken five wickets in an innings.

Bowling dominance and match context

Supporting Sharma’s efforts, left-arm pacer Sunil Kumar proved equally effective, claiming four wickets to keep the pressure on the visitors. Auqib Nabi also contributed to the bowling effort, picking up one wicket for 42 runs. Despite a resilient 79 from Madhya Pradesh captain Shubham Sharma, the batting lineup struggled to build significant partnerships against the disciplined Jammu and Kashmir attack.

Following the conclusion of the Madhya Pradesh innings, Jammu and Kashmir faced a brief period of play before stumps. The hosts ended the day at 3/1, having lost one wicket in the process. Prior to this match, Rohit Sharma had accumulated 39 wickets across 22 first-class appearances at an average of 34.66. While he was included in the squad for the Irani Cup earlier this month, he did not feature in the playing XI during the match where the Rest of India claimed a 167-run victory in Srinagar. With this strong start, the defending champions will look to build a substantial lead as the match progresses.
