Pakistan faces setback as captain Babar Azam is sidelined for the opening Test match against England.

In a significant blow to Pakistan's cricket team, newly reappointed captain Babar Azam has been ruled out of the first Test against England due to a finger injury. The injury occurred while he was batting against the West Indies and was exacerbated during a warm-up match in Beckenham. Pakistan's coach, Sarfaraz Ahmed, confirmed the news, stating, "Pakistan captain Babar Azam is unavailable for the first test match." In his absence, Salman Agha will take over the captaincy for this crucial match.

Although Babar's injury is not a fracture, Ahmed expressed hope that the pain would subside in time for the second Test at Lord’s, scheduled to begin on August 27. Babar's absence is particularly impactful as he had recently returned to the captaincy and was the top run-scorer for Pakistan in the series against the West Indies. Agha, who will lead the team in a Test for the first time, has prior experience as captain in T20 matches. Additionally, Shan Masood, who was replaced by Babar as captain, is set to return after recovering from his own broken finger.

Pakistan's Preparations and Confidence

Coach Ahmed expressed optimism about the team's readiness, stating, "Our practice match gave us a lot of confidence. Whatever bases we needed to cover with bat and ball, we did. We believe we'll do very well here." The team is looking to build on their recent performances, despite the setback of losing their captain.

England's New Leadership Dynamics

On the other side, England is entering the series with a revamped leadership structure. Joe Root has returned as captain following the retirement of Ben Stokes, while Brendon McCullum has stepped down from his coaching role. Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim coach in the absence of new head coach Stephen Fleming, who is not participating in this series. Root, who previously captained England from 2017 to 2022, expressed confidence in his readiness for the role, stating, "I feel as ready as any other England captain that's ever been before." He also highlighted the importance of his vice-captain, Harry Brook, saying, "I fully feel he's got my back like the rest of the guys do."
