The PCB confirmed on Monday that seven players are being sent home, while Test coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul have been instructed to depart England immediately. In their place, white-ball coach Mike Hesson will take charge of the team for the final Test match scheduled to take place in Birmingham.
Arthur labels PCB strategy as cause of team's decline
Expressing his frustration on social media, Arthur described the board's decision-making process as absolutely ridiculous. The former coach argued that the current state of the national team is a direct consequence of the PCB's tendency to constantly rotate players, coaches, and selectors without allowing for any period of sustained development.
Arthur emphasised that consistent performance is only achievable through a foundation of planning, stability, and structure. He suggested that the board's habit of making frequent, reactionary changes is actively hindering the team's ability to build a competitive environment, leaving the squad in a state of perpetual flux.
Squad overhaul follows consecutive heavy defeats
The drastic measures follow two lopsided results at the hands of England. Pakistan were defeated by an innings and 103 runs in the opening Test, followed by a 194-run loss at Lord’s. In both instances, the team failed to extend the matches into the fifth day, with the batting lineup struggling to withstand pressure.
The seven players departing the tour include Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Zafar, and Khurram Shahzad. They will be replaced by a group that includes five uncapped players, alongside Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who have previously featured in the Test format. Additionally, Arafat Minhas, who has experience in white-ball cricket, has been drafted into the squad.
As Pakistan sits at the bottom of the World Test Championship standings, the responsibility now falls on Mike Hesson to stabilise the side for the final match of the series. The ongoing turmoil has intensified scrutiny on the PCB’s administration as they attempt to address the team's lack of consistency on the international stage.
