Mumbai has confirmed a leadership change for the upcoming 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season, appointing veteran batter
The move, announced by the Mumbai senior selection committee, aims to balance the team's leadership requirements with the physical demands placed on its key players. Thakur, who captained the squad across formats during the previous season, will remain a central figure in the team's plans, though the management has opted to relieve him of leadership duties to focus on his performance as a match-winner.
Focus on Workload and Continuity
Rajesh Pawar, chairman of the Mumbai senior selection committee, explained that the decision was reached after careful consideration of player welfare. According to Pawar, the heavy workload associated with being a primary bowling and batting option in the long-format Ranji Trophy necessitated a change in captaincy.
Pawar noted that with 10 matches scheduled for the season, the team needs to manage Thakur’s physical output, which may include resting him for specific fixtures. By removing the additional burden of captaincy, the committee hopes to ensure Thakur remains fresh and effective. Both Lad and Thakur were consulted regarding the transition, and the committee confirmed that both players have responded positively to the change.
A Reward for Consistent Form
The appointment of the 34-year-old Lad follows a highly productive 2025-26 season, where he established himself as Mumbai's most reliable batter. Lad finished as the team’s leading run-scorer, accumulating 774 runs across eight matches at a notable average of 77.40. His campaign was highlighted by five centuries, underscoring his value to the side.
With a first-class career spanning 82 matches, Lad brings significant experience to the role, having amassed 5,623 runs at an average of 44.27, including 15 centuries and 30 half-centuries. The team is looking for this stability as they prepare for their opening match against Chandigarh, scheduled for October 11-14 at the Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai is placed in Elite Group D, where they will face Chandigarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Railways, Tamil Nadu, and Uttarakhand.
