Pavandeep Singh Sets the Tone with Four-Wicket Haul

Malaysia asserted their dominance in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Asia Sub Regional Qualifier B on Wednesday, restricting Maldives to a modest total of 125/9 at the YSD-UKM Cricket Oval in Bangi. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Malaysian attack maintained consistent pressure throughout the first innings, led by a masterful spell from Pavandeep Singh.

Pavandeep was the standout performer with the ball, dismantling the Maldives batting lineup to finish with impressive figures of 4/13 from his four overs. While Iqbal Sheraz provided some resistance for Maldives, scoring 47 off 36 balls, and Azyan Farhath contributed 28 off 25, the rest of the batting order struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Malaysian bowling unit. The tight lines ensured that Maldives never truly accelerated, leaving them with a target that looked well within reach for the home side.

Syed Aziz Leads Clinical Chase

Chasing 126 for victory, Malaysia faced an early scare as they lost three quick wickets, threatening to derail their pursuit. The turning point of the innings arrived early when Nazmus Sakib fell with the score at 54 in just 3.1 overs. However, any hopes Maldives had of a collapse were quickly extinguished by a spectacular counter-attack from Syed Aziz.

Syed Aziz took the game away from the opposition with a blistering 57 off just 18 balls. His aggressive approach ensured that the required run rate never became an issue, allowing Malaysia to recover from their shaky start and cruise toward the target. Supported by the efforts of the middle order, Malaysia reached 127/4 to secure a six-wicket win. Alongside the match-winning contributions of Syed Aziz and Pavandeep Singh, Umar Adam also played a key role in the victory, rounding out a comprehensive performance for the team in this qualifier fixture.
