Kapil Dev Emphasizes Need for Consistent Play to Combat Cricket Injuries

Legendary Indian cricketer and 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has weighed in on the current state of Indian cricket, highlighting the necessity for players to maintain a rigorous playing schedule to avoid injuries. Speaking from the Jaypee Greens Golf & Spa Resort, where he is actively involved in promoting the sport as president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), Dev addressed the recurring fitness concerns facing modern athletes.

When asked about the frequent injury struggles of players like Hardik Pandya, Dev suggested that the solution lies in increased match time. He noted that a body becomes conditioned to the demands of the sport through consistent activity. According to Dev, when players participate less frequently and then suddenly increase their workload, the risk of injury rises significantly. He emphasized that maintaining muscle fitness through regular play is essential for longevity in the game.

Focusing on the Future and Player Development

Reflecting on the evolution of the sport, Dev observed that modern cricketers benefit from superior equipment and a wider array of opportunities compared to his own era. He pointed to the example of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose successful return to form after a four-year hiatus demonstrated the value of perseverance and utilizing available platforms like the IPL. Dev noted that while the system provides more chances today, the credit for such comebacks ultimately rests with the individual player's dedication.

Regarding the search for the next generation of talent, Dev expressed a constant desire to identify players capable of sustaining a 15-year career, similar to the legacies of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. While acknowledging the potential of young prospects like 16-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dev urged caution, noting that early talent does not always guarantee long-term success. He stressed that a player's lifestyle and mental approach over the coming years would be the true indicators of their ability to reach the top level.

Dev also shared his admiration for Jasprit Bumrah, admitting that the fast bowler’s unorthodox action has defied his initial expectations. He praised Bumrah for his ability to become a world-leading bowler despite a technique that many previously doubted would be sustainable. On the topic of former teammate Vinod Kambli, Dev expressed a desire for humanitarian support, emphasizing that while help is available, the responsibility for personal recovery ultimately lies with the individual.

Beyond cricket, Dev remains deeply committed to his role with the PGTI. He advocated for better infrastructure for professional golfers, arguing that top-tier players should have unrestricted access to practice facilities to compete on the international stage. For Dev, his transition into golf administration is a passion project, driven by a desire to contribute to the growth of sports in India.
