Kapil Dev urges caution over teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Former India captain Kapil Dev has urged the cricketing community to temper expectations surrounding 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Despite the teenager's rapid ascent through the age-group ranks and his inclusion in the national T20I setup, the legendary all-rounder believes it is premature to label him the next major star of Indian cricket.

Sooryavanshi has captured significant attention with his explosive performances, currently waiting in the wings behind established openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. While acknowledging the youngster's clear ability, Kapil emphasized that historical precedent suggests talent alone is not a guarantee of sustained success at the highest level.

The challenge of long-term consistency

Reflecting on the nature of professional cricket, Kapil pointed to the career of former India batter Vinod Kambli as a cautionary tale. He noted that many players have entered the sport with immense natural gifts only to fade away before reaching their full potential. According to Kapil, the true test for Sooryavanshi will lie in how he manages the inevitable changes in lifestyle and mindset over the coming years.

The former captain suggested that a three-year window is necessary to properly evaluate the teenager's trajectory. He argued that observing how a player matures and adapts as they navigate the pressures of professional cricket is far more telling than isolated displays of brilliance. For Kapil, the ultimate benchmark for any young talent is the capacity to perform at the elite level for a decade or more, similar to the careers of stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.

A rapid rise to prominence

Sooryavanshi’s reputation has been built on a series of high-impact innings. In June, he set a blistering pace in List A cricket, scoring the fastest fifty in the format off just 11 balls, eventually contributing 94 runs from 29 deliveries for India A against Sri Lanka A. This followed a standout performance in the Under-19 World Cup final in Harare earlier in February, where he struck 175 off 80 balls to secure the title for India.

His momentum continued into the 2026 IPL season, where he claimed the Orange Cap and set multiple batting records, leading to his selection for the national T20I squad. Despite these achievements, Kapil remains focused on the long-term horizon, stating that his interest lies in identifying players who possess the durability to replace legends and sustain a 15-year career. As the spotlight intensifies on Sooryavanshi, the veteran's message serves as a reminder that development away from the field remains the most critical factor in determining a player's longevity.
