Jemimah Rodrigues' injury sidelines her from both the Asia Cup and Asian Games, dealing a significant setback for India.

Jemimah Rodrigues, a prominent batter for the Indian women's cricket team, has been sidelined from both the upcoming Women’s Asia Cup and the Asian Games due to a significant right hamstring injury. The 25-year-old athlete sustained this high-grade tear while competing for Southern Brave in The Hundred tournament in England on August 3. Following the injury, Rodrigues underwent a thorough evaluation by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Medical Team at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, which confirmed the severity of her condition.

Pratika Rawal Steps In

In light of Rodrigues' absence, Pratika Rawal has been called up to replace her in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup. Rawal, who has previously represented India in One Day Internationals (ODIs), returns to the national team after recovering from a knee injury that had kept her out of the recent Test match against England. The injury occurred while she was fielding for India A, resulting in stitches and a temporary setback in her career.

The Women’s Asia Cup is set to commence in the United Arab Emirates on August 28, with India placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Thailand, and Hong Kong. A highly anticipated match against arch-rivals Pakistan is scheduled for September 5 in Dubai. The tournament format allows the top two teams from each group to advance to the semi-finals, culminating in the final match on September 13.

Impact on Asian Games Participation

Rodrigues' injury will also prevent her from participating in the Asian Games, which will take place in Nagoya from September 17 to October 3. Women's cricket will be contested in the T20 format during the event, with India entering as the top-seeded team. They are set to begin their campaign in the quarter-finals against Japan, with a potential semi-final matchup against either Bangladesh or Hong Kong, China. Notably, Pakistan is positioned in the opposite half of the draw, meaning the two teams can only meet in the gold medal match or the bronze medal playoff, both scheduled for September 22.

India's updated squad for the Women’s Asia Cup includes captain Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and several other key players such as Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, and the newly added Pratika Rawal.
