Shubman Gill discusses the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and his connection with Sai Sudharsan before the Galle Test.

Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian cricket team, has been declared fit to lead his side in the upcoming first Test against Sri Lanka, set to commence on August 15 in Galle. Despite this positive news, the Indian squad faces challenges due to injuries affecting key players, notably Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan, who have both been ruled out of the two-match series.

Jasprit Bumrah, who was initially part of the squad, has been sidelined due to a knee injury. Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan is dealing with a toe issue that has prevented him from recovering in time for the matches. During a pre-match press conference, Gill emphasized the team's commitment to monitoring the fitness of these injured players closely. “Yes, we are in touch with them. There is constant monitoring on players and where they are (in terms of fitness),” he stated.

Gill expressed disappointment over Sudharsan's situation, noting that the batter's absence is unfortunate. “Sai’s case was quite unfortunate. It looked like he would be able to be a part of the series. But we did constant scans and he wasn't improving as much as we would have liked or expected him to be,” he explained. The captain highlighted the importance of prioritizing player health, especially given the rigorous demands of Test cricket.

Discussing the implications of the five-day Test format, Gill pointed out that the nature of the game necessitates careful consideration regarding player fitness. “The Test match is for 5 days. If it's one-day or T20, then it's a different story. But in the Test match, you don't want to take a risk,” he noted. He further elaborated that the structure of Test matches allows players multiple opportunities to perform, which influenced the decision to exclude the injured players from the lineup.

Despite the absence of Bumrah and Sudharsan, Gill remains optimistic about the team's depth. He reassured fans that the morale within the squad remains high, stating, “But it didn't affect the morale of the team that much that they didn't get the first 11. I feel that whoever is in our 15 or whoever we give a chance in our playing 11 in any condition, they can play well and win the game.”

The first Test of the series will take place at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, with the second Test scheduled for the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23 to 27.
