Sairaj Bahutule, India's spin bowling coach, has eased worries regarding Kuldeep Yadav's fitness following his absence from bowling in the second match.

India's coach faces major selection dilemma regarding Kuldeep Yadav's participation in the upcoming Galle Test.

Concerns regarding Kuldeep Yadav's fitness have been addressed by India's spin bowling coach, Sairaj Bahutule, following the left-arm wrist-spinner's absence from bowling in the second innings of a recent warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI. Kuldeep had a productive outing, delivering 18 overs during the three-day fixture and an additional two to three overs prior to the match. Bahutule clarified that the decision to rest him was a precautionary measure, aimed at gauging his physical response to the workload.

"Kuldeep bowled almost 20 overs, including 18 in the match and a couple before it. He had a solid performance and wanted to take a break to assess how his body felt," Bahutule explained after the warm-up game. With Kuldeep sidelined, other spinners, including Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar, took the opportunity to bowl extended spells, each contributing around 14 to 15 overs. Saransh Jain also had a chance to showcase his skills as the team evaluated its options ahead of the first Test in Galle.

Preparation for Test Conditions

The warm-up match served as a crucial acclimatization exercise for the Indian team, allowing players to familiarize themselves with local pitch conditions. Bahutule noted that the surface initially provided limited assistance to spinners but began to turn as the match progressed, offering valuable insights into the conditions expected during the Test series. "The bowlers had a great opportunity to express themselves on a pitch that was relatively flat on the first day. However, as the game went on, it started to turn, making it a beneficial outing for our spinners," he remarked.

Bahutule emphasized the importance of preparation, stating, "Understanding how the pitches behave is vital for our success on this tour. While experienced players like Jadeja are familiar with these conditions, newcomers like Manav and Saransh need to adapt to the ideal lines and lengths, as well as field placements." The warm-up also allowed India's lower-order batters to gain valuable time at the crease, with the coaching staff encouraging bowlers to enhance their batting skills.

Positive Developments and Team Dynamics

Another encouraging sign for India was the recovery of captain Shubman Gill, who had been sidelined after sustaining a hand injury during a net session. He returned to the field later in the match, contributing runs and participating in catching drills. Bahutule confirmed that there were no lingering concerns regarding Gill's injury, stating, "It was purely precautionary, and he has been training well." Gill's meticulous preparation for the challenges posed by Sri Lanka's spin attack has been noted, with the coaching staff working to simulate various scenarios he may encounter in the upcoming series.

Devdutt Padikkal also made a strong case for inclusion in the playing XI with a century in India's first innings. Bahutule acknowledged Padikkal's performance but indicated that the final selection would depend on the conditions in Galle. As India prepares for the opening Test, the competition among spinners, including Jadeja, Suthar, Jain, and Kuldeep, is seen as a positive aspect of the team's strategy. "Each spinner brings unique qualities to the table, and this variety will be crucial as we finalize our spin attack," Bahutule concluded.
