Ajinkya Rahane shares how CSK revolutionized his IPL journey with a pivotal change.

Ajinkya Rahane, a seasoned player in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has long been recognized for his role as an anchor in the batting lineup. Over the course of 19 seasons, starting from the inaugural tournament in 2008 and extending to the 2026 edition, Rahane has donned the colors of six different franchises, participating in 212 matches. He currently ranks eighth on the all-time run-scoring list, amassing 5,367 runs with an average of 30.15 and a strike rate of 125.60. However, despite his extensive career, it took Rahane 16 years to finally secure an IPL title.

The pivotal moment in Rahane's career came in 2023 when he was signed by the Chennai Super Kings for his base price of Rs 50 lakh. At the age of 35, he underwent a remarkable transformation, showcasing a more aggressive batting style that had rarely been seen in his previous seasons. During the 2023 campaign, Rahane scored 326 runs, but it was his impressive strike rate of 172.48 that truly set him apart, a significant increase from his previous season's strike rate of 103.90. Notably, prior to 2023, he had never achieved a strike rate of 140 or higher in any IPL season.

Reinventing His Game

Reflecting on his earlier years in the IPL during an interview with The Indian Express, Rahane discussed how his designated role influenced his gameplay. He noted that from 2019 onwards, after leaving the Rajasthan Royals and moving to the Delhi Capitals and then the Kolkata Knight Riders, he found himself playing less frequently. "As a player, you always need that confidence. You need the surety to play with freedom," he explained. His previous role often required him to play conservatively, maintaining a strike rate of around 120-130 while allowing more aggressive players to take the lead.

Rahane's transformation began well before the 2023 season. He dedicated two months to preparation, focusing on developing a more aggressive shot selection and building the confidence to execute them in matches. "When the shift happened in 2023 with CSK, I had a good two months of preparation," he said. This groundwork laid the foundation for what he termed "Rahane 2.0," a more liberated version of himself as a batsman.

A Breakthrough Performance

The opportunity for Rahane to showcase his new approach came unexpectedly during a match at the Wankhede Stadium on April 8, 2023. Initially not included in the playing XI, he was called upon due to an illness affecting Moeen Ali. Seizing the moment, Rahane delivered a stunning performance, scoring 61 runs off just 27 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. This match marked a significant turning point in his career, as he embraced a fearless batting style, bolstered by the support of the CSK management.

For Rahane, this evolution was not merely about adopting a more aggressive batting style; it was a culmination of meticulous preparation, a shift in mindset, and the assurance of his team's backing. After years of adhering to a specific role, he finally found the freedom to redefine his approach, proving that even at an age when many players consider retirement, he could still make a significant impact in the IPL.
