The announcement of India's squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand, along with the subsequent Test matches, has been delayed until next week. While the tour is set to commence with the first ODI in Auckland on November 4, selectors have opted to wait to finalise the roster to gain a clearer picture of player form.
According to reports, the decision-making panel is currently using the ongoing unofficial ODI series between India A and Australia A as a final evaluation ground. This strategic delay is intended to allow selectors to assess fringe players against high-quality opposition before committing to the final touring party. The management is also planning to maintain an alternate squad for the final two ODIs, as several Test regulars are expected to depart early to begin their specific preparations for the longer format.
Evaluating Talent in the India A Series
The India A fixtures have provided a vital platform for ODI hopefuls to prove their worth. However, the team faced a significant challenge in their most recent outing, suffering a 125-run defeat against Australia A. Chasing a target of 275, the Indian side was dismissed for 149, with only Rajat Patidar offering notable resistance with an innings of 53.
The match highlighted the threat posed by Australian pace, particularly from 21-year-old Mahli Beardman. Returning from a seven-month layoff due to a lumbar bone stress fracture, the Western Australia quick dismantled the Indian top order, finishing with impressive figures of 4 for 23. The performance of players like Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Prabhsimran Singh, and Suryansh Shedge against such bowling is being closely scrutinised by the selectors, with several individuals from this group expected to be considered for the final two matches of the New Zealand ODI series.
T20I Squad Confirmed and Test Preparations
While the ODI and Test squads remain under review, the BCCI has confirmed the T20I squad for the New Zealand tour.
Beyond the white-ball fixtures, the selection committee is also managing the India A squad for their upcoming three multi-day matches against New Zealand A. This rotation policy is designed to ensure that players remain match-ready for the Test series, which holds significant weight for India’s prospects of qualifying for the World Test Championship final.
