Finn Allen eyes new role in New Zealand middle-order for India ODI series

Finn Allen is set to embrace a tactical shift as he returns to the New Zealand ODI setup, with the team management looking to trial the explosive opener in the middle-order. The 27-year-old, who has not featured in a 50-over international since the 2023 tour of Bangladesh, has been drafted into the squad for the final two matches of the ongoing series against India.

This strategic move is part of New Zealand’s long-term planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup. By positioning Allen in the middle-order, the team hopes to leverage his natural aggression to counter opposition spinners and put pressure on the fifth or sixth bowling options during the middle overs of the innings.

Adapting to a new tactical role

Reflecting on the transition, Allen expressed enthusiasm for the challenge of batting outside his traditional opening role. He noted that while the position is unfamiliar, the objective remains clear: to maintain his attacking intent while adjusting his tempo to the specific demands of the middle-overs phase. He highlighted the importance of reading match situations, whether the team requires a period of consolidation or a rapid acceleration.

Allen, who has accumulated 582 runs across 22 ODIs at an average of 27.71 with five half-centuries, emphasized that he does not intend to abandon his aggressive style. Instead, he plans to refine his approach by selecting lower-risk scoring options, such as hitting boundaries along the ground and prioritizing diligent strike rotation. He believes that understanding the shift in field restrictions—moving from the powerplay to the middle phase—will be key to his success in this new capacity.

Building towards the future

The decision to trial Allen in the middle-order comes as New Zealand looks to reshape its batting lineup following the retirement of Kane Williamson. When asked about the prospect of filling such a significant void in the team, Allen remained grounded, noting that he is focused on his own game rather than attempting to replicate the legendary batter's output.

Allen credited his recent domestic performances for Auckland and experience in various T20 leagues for his improved maturity. He believes these opportunities have allowed him to better control his innings and adapt to varying conditions. As he prepares to face India, the focus remains on proving his versatility and securing a long-term spot in the side as the Black Caps build toward the next World Cup cycle.
