Ravens face quarterback crisis ahead of Thursday clash with Jaguars

The Baltimore Ravens are navigating a significant personnel crisis at the quarterback position as they prepare for a short-week turnaround against the Jacksonville Jaguars this Thursday. Head coach Jesse Minter confirmed that the team’s depth chart is severely compromised, with primary options Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley already ruled out for the upcoming contest.

Joe Fagnano, the team's third-string quarterback, is currently managing an ankle injury that has left his status for Thursday night uncertain. Despite the setback, Minter expressed optimism regarding Fagnano’s availability, noting that the undrafted rookie participated in a limited capacity during Monday's walk-through session. Should Fagnano be cleared to start, he would become only the second undrafted rookie quarterback to start for the franchise in its 32-year history.

Quarterback uncertainty and roster adjustments

With the status of the quarterback room remaining fluid, the Ravens have turned to Austin Reed to provide necessary depth. Reed, who was signed to the practice squad on Monday, possesses familiarity with the team’s offensive scheme from his time at training camp and his previous experience playing under offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. Minter indicated that the final decision regarding the starting signal-caller will be determined in the coming days.

The team is also managing the long-term implications of Lamar Jackson’s right thumb injury. Minter confirmed that Jackson is set to be placed on injured reserve, with the coach previously acknowledging that the injury could potentially end the star quarterback's season. While Jackson has not yet undergone surgery, the team is preparing to adjust their overall approach to compensate for his absence, focusing on a collective effort across all three phases of the game.

Special teams changes and upcoming challenges

In addition to the instability at quarterback, the Ravens are preparing for a change at the kicker position. Tyler Loop, who has struggled with consistency throughout his second season, is dealing with a right groin injury and may be placed on injured reserve. Minter confirmed that Jake Moody, a 2023 third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers currently on the practice squad, is expected to handle kicking duties against Jacksonville.

The Ravens enter the matchup with a 4-4 record, currently sitting in last place in the AFC North following three consecutive losses. Facing an 8.5-point spread, Baltimore enters the game as significant home underdogs, marking their largest underdog status at home since December 2021. The team continues to evaluate their options as they look to break their losing streak in a challenging primetime environment.
